The two significant events held this week have been the Secondary School Awards evening and the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. On the first weekend of the school holidays, our students participated in the Sony Camp. Some of our students and staff have provided reflections on this experience and what it has meant to them over the last two years.

"Sony Camp is an initiative designed to allow us as students to provide an enjoyable weekend respite for children with intellectual disabilities and provide these children with the opportunity for friendly interaction in a fun environment. However, it is so much more than this. Sony Camp is about connecting with these kids, building a relationship with them and developing an understanding of their stories and the hardships that they face on a day-to-day basis. Connecting with these wonderful kids allows us to not only provide them with an enjoyable time but also provide ourselves with one of the most enriching opportunities a person can experience."

Donations for Sudan: 

Mr Ben Angalo, our multicultural support officer is going to Sudan at the end of the year to do work in some of the villages. Over the last five years, Mr Angalo has been instrumental in setting up schools and education programs in the village. Mr Angalo has asked if there is anyone in the community with school uniforms they no longer need, to consider donating towards the school in Sudan. East Timor Immersion 2024:

The East Timor Immersion takes place in the June holidays of 2024. Please see HERE for more information, including an itinerary of the immersion trip. From previous trips, one key place I would like to share with you the is the Orphanage we stay at while we are based in Dili. There are still spots available so if you are interested please respond HERE.

If you have already registered, you are not required to register again. A notification has been sent which includes the payment portal.

Children of the Dominican Orphanage – Dili, East Timor

While in Dili, students will stay at the Dominican Sisters Orphanage. As part of this experience, our students will spend time with the children – accompanying them to school on one of the mornings also take them on a beach excursion.

Many of the teens and adolescents who live in this orphanage lost their parents during the atrocities of the Indonesian backed TNI militias, in the lead up to and the aftermath of the 1999 Independence Vote. The younger children have been come into the care of the Dominican Sisters due the poverty of their parents as East Timor struggles to gain its feet since it gained independence.

Unfortunately, only one child of the seventy living at the Dominican Sisters Orphanage has been adopted in recent times. The children lack books for their education and the basics children in the Western world take for granted as well as many other basics of life. However, they gain love and companionship from each other... and rely on the dedication and care of the devoted Dominican Sisters.

East Timor Village Experience

We then venture into the mountains into the villages outside of Dili, for a village experience. These villages have been supported by the Christian Brothers, Edmund Rice Foundation and Mary Mackillop Projects. Some of the activities include:

• Visits to Edmund Rice/Mary MacKillop supported projects
• Activities with local school
• Sport activities
• Walks through community farms
• Meeting with community leaders

The ‘Beans of Hope’ project was established in Railaco villages in the Ermera District of Timor Leste in 2015. From small beginnings, it has grown to include 665 farmers. The goal is to improve the livelihoods of farmers through generating a sustainable and fair income from Vanilla Farming.

Secondary Excellence Awards Night

Congratulations to all our award winners last night. It was truly a special occasion and I particularly congratulate the Year 12 major award winners. The Year 12 2023 Top 3 academically ranked students based on ATAR result, including the College Dux, will be announced at our first Academic Assembly in 2024.

I also would like to thank staff who made the night a success, including our fantastic stage managers (Ms Aimee Watt and Ms Chloe Coslovich), Heads of Faculty, Heads of House, Mr Stewart Williams, the IT team (very ably led by Mr Nick Lieschke), Mr John McGeachin, Music staff, Mr Will Pike, the Communications team, Ms Samantha Harris and finally, our students who are all outstanding Laurie’s Gentlemen!

Year 12 External Assessment Information.

I have sent information to Year 12 students and parents regarding expectations of External Exams via previous editions of the newsletter, and an email has been sent this week with more specific information. The email, in case parents and students missed it, can be found [HERE].

As sent previously, the College timetable for External Assessment can be found [HERE].

We ask that you help us to reinforce the below expectations with students:

• Students are asked to arrive at the scheduled arrival time. This will allow for marshalling, equipment checking and arrangement in alphabetical order. This will also help prevent unnecessary stress due to students arriving late.
• Mobile phones MUST be left in lockers. Students in possession of mobile phones may be removed from the exam room due to academic misconduct, and their exam mark could be affected – thus negatively impacting their ATAR.
• Students must bring the correct equipment for their exam.
• Students are highly encouraged to utilise every second of the exam time, check, re-check and check answers again if finished early.
• Students are not permitted to leave the exam room early.

We wish students the very best of luck as they move into External Exams next week. I congratulate them on their outstanding behaviour and attitude thus far this year.

YEAR 12 Workshops

On Tuesday of Week 3, ATAR eligible Year 12 students were involved in targeted workshops designed to assist with their approach and understanding of questions in the external exams, and to fine-tune their ability to interpret questions across a number of subjects in order to create a high-level response. The program was run by Mr Neill Smith, who has expertise in running similar programs for Senior students at a number of schools across Queensland to improve planning, writing and, importantly, how to successfully address the criteria on a marking scheme.

The presentation ran for a half-day session, and the boys were engaged with a combination of learning and group activities. The resources have also been shared with the students so they can review the content as they prepare for external exams starting in Week 4.

University of Tasmania Agriculture Experience

The University of Tasmania is offering science students a first-hand look at the booming Tasmanian agriculture industry with the Feed Your Mind, Feed The World experience.

Feed Your Mind, Feed The World is a free three-day camp held in Northwest Tasmania on 4-6 December 2023 for Year 11 and 12 students wanting to learn about exciting career opportunities in agricultural science.

Students will see first-hand the science behind some of Tasmania's leading agricultural businesses, including a robotic dairy, commercial flower producer, cider orchard, vegetable processing and more.

The University of Tasmania will be providing accommodation, meals and transportation in Tasmania but students would have to arrange their flights to Tasmania at their own expense.

Our staff can collect students from Hobart and Launceston airports. However, due to the location of the camp, we encourage students to fly into Launceston airport.

20 October - QTAC applications must be submitted by this date to be eligible for the QUT Early Offer Scheme

31 October – Students must upload evidence of their results to their QTAC application by this date to be considered for the early offer round on 17 November

14 November – Students must have an eligible QUT course as their first preference in their QTAC application by this date

Griffith University Early Offer Guarantee:

16 October - QTAC applications must be submitted by this date to be eligible for the Griffith University Early Offer Guarantee

31 October – Students must upload evidence of their results to their QTAC application by this date to be considered for the early offer round on 17 November

Please note that the dates are slightly different for each of the schemes. As each scheme requires that the course from their university be placed first on students’ QTAC preference list, students will only be able to receive an early offer for one of the programs, meaning that if they have eligible QUT and Griffith University courses in their preference list and receive invitations to apply for both, they will have to decide which they would prefer to pursue.

If students do not have all of their IA results confirmed and visible on their MyQCE account (which they will need in order to apply for the early offer schemes) by 20 October, please come to the Careers Office to discuss.

APC Chartered Accountants are based in the Brisbane CBD and provide tax, accounting, business advisory services and superannuation advice to a wide client base. Graduating class of 2023

Today we held our graduation ceremony for our Year 12 Senior class of 2023. These gentlemen have consistently displayed a remarkable commitment to excellence, inspiring their peers through their unwavering dedication to their studies and extracurricular activities. Whether it was achieving academic milestones, leading sports teams to victory, or spearheading various community service initiatives, these Seniors have consistently exemplified the spirit of perseverance and the values of integrity, compassion, and inclusivity.

Moreover, their presence has enriched our school community in countless ways, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity, creativity and brotherhood. Their active involvement in various clubs, organisations and events has not only contributed to the vibrant atmosphere of our college but has also inspired younger students to follow in their footsteps and strive for excellence in their own pursuits. As we bid farewell to the Class of 2023, we encourage each Senior to carry the invaluable lessons learned and memories forged during their time at St Laurence's College into the next chapter of their lives. House Cup

Congratulations to Nagle House, Mr Welmar du Plessis (Head of House) and Miguel Galarion (House Captain) on winning the House Cup for 2023. Throughout the year, Nagle House have consistently finished in the top half of House events, but they excelled this year winning the Interhouse Cross Country, Choir Competition and the Sports Day (the latter two events delivering double points for the House Cup). This year, due to their consistency, Nagle House had the biggest winning margin ever recorded in the House Cup, over Waterford in second, followed by Duhig in third.

Another busy weekend ahead 

Over the next three days, we have two Volleyball teams participating in the Volleyball Queensland Schools Cup down on the Gold Coast. Thank you to Mr Bird for organising these teams and best of luck to all students involved.

On Saturday, the College will host the AIC Touch Invitational Carnival at Runcorn, where there will be 44 teams across seven schools competing. On Sunday, the College will have three teams competing in the AIC Water Polo Carnival at Marist Ashgrove. This is an annual event and gives our elite water polo players an opportunity to play for their College and gives the opportunity for students who are new to the sport to experience the game.

These carnivals show what great opportunities are available for our students. Touch and Waterpolo fall outside of the traditional ‘Term Sport’ windows, however, it is yet again another opportunity for our students to represent their College and experience competitive sport against other AIC Schools.   

AFLQ Finals Weekend

Last weekend, all of the College’s AFL Teams played in the AFLQ Schools Cup finals weekend at Maroochydore. The teams again represented the College with the greatest of pride, with both the Senior and Junior teams finishing second and the Primary team fourth in their competition. This is an incredible effort and congratulations must go to all boys and staff involved and to Mr Sam Wiltshire for organising.  

CBSQ Basketball 

On the same weekend, our Year 9/10 Basketball team competed in the CBSQ ‘Junior Tournament’. The team finished third in Division Three, meaning that the College will now move up into Division Two next year. This is a fantastic result, so a big well done to all the boys and to Mr Holzheimer and Mr Smith for coaching.

2024, Term 1 Trials

Trials for the majority of sports (All except Year 5 and 7 2023) have commenced and/or will be starting in the week 5 this term. The detailed trial schedules have been included in the season information booklets that are now available on the College App.

The course will take place at Woolloongabba across three fabulous venues – Mr Badgers, Canvas and Electric Avenue.  Delivered in collaboration with St Laurence's College Old Boy, Dan Rodriguez, this course is a great way to get into the hospitality industry.  

This course is:

• Free to anyone who meets the criteria (not in full time study, over 16, unemployed or underemployed)
• Training done on site at the venues at Wooloongabba
• 3 days per week working on four accredited units
• 2 days in the venues working
• Potential for all participants to gain paid work and become a member of the team whilst still training.

This course is unique as it blends 4 hospitality units, delivered by Training Direct Australia and the SCIPS employability skillset training, allowing participants to gain not only work but connections to other local venues, looking to hire NOW, over the Christmas period and beyond.

Suited to anyone who is not in full time study and is over the age of 16, no upper age limit – and working within school friendly hours for those who have family commitments. This is a short course that packs a punch and has built in on the job training with the venue owners looking to employ up to 20 participants.
