This week we were able to welcome back most of the 65 past students from the Class of 2022 who received an ATAR above 90. At this same assembly, academic Black and Gold award winners from Years 5 - 11 in 2022 were also acknowledged. A parent afternoon tea was also conducted at 4pm on the day for the Gold Award winners. 

These ceremonies are an appropriate recognition of excellence.

In particular, I congratulate two former students who received the joint Dux Award in 2022. 

I congratulate Adam Brouwers and Cameron Griffiths, who both received an ATAR of 99.90. The winner of the Proxime Accessit was James Starling (99.65) and the Br Spillane Memorial Award went to Cooper Dean (99.60).  The young men of the Class of 2022 have been excellent role models for the younger students. We are most proud of them all. Some moved into full-time employment with most entering tertiary studies this year. May God Bless the Class of 2022.

On Thursday evening we held our Virtual Open Day. This was designed to be interactive, and allow those online to field questions at the conclusion of some College presentations. I thank our Communications Team led by Ms Helen Turner and Mr Nick Lieschke and the Information Technology Team for supporting the Leadership Team on the night. I especially thank Mackenzie Douglas, our College Captain and Ms Bianca Long, who is a parent of two boys at the College for their involvement in the panel. 

Because our Year 7 2025 enrolment interviews will begin next week we have also held a series of Principal’s Tours to engage with potential future Lauries students and families. Offers for Year 7 2025 will go out by week eight of this Term. In Term 3, interviews will be conducted for Year 5 2025. Our Open Day will be held on Thursday 27 July.

We look forward to engaging with future students and parents.

Next week, we celebrate our Opening Mass on Tuesday. We also welcome the Trustees of Edmund Rice College to St Laurence’s College to celebrate Mass with us and to conduct their Board Meeting. I very much look forward to meeting the Trustees and celebrating our Opening Mass.

Year 11 Vietnam Building Across Borders Immersion 

We are pleased to announce that our International Immersion program will recommence this year for the first time since 2019. The Vietnam Building Across Borders Immersion takes place from 16 September – 1 October 2023. Students have a chance to build homes for families in need while also working in other areas such as a school for the deaf. Students also have the chance to explore the rich culture and history of the nation by exploring Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. This experience offers our students the opportunity to serve others and to walk with and hear their stories. Immersion experiences allow our students to return with a new perspective of all those they meet and to understand each person has their own story.

We have approximately 26 spots available to students across Year 11. Please see a detailed itinerary attached HERE that will give you more information about the immersion.

Opening Year Mass

Our Opening Mass will take place on Tuesday 14 February at 8.45am. This will take place in ERPAC and is a wonderful chance for us to come together as a College and celebrate in unity but also it gives us a chance to welcome the newest members of our College and show the strength of our community. Hearing our students sing in full voice is an absolute highlight and we look forward to celebrating this event next week. 

National Apology Anniversary: 

On 13 February 2008, then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered the Australian Government’s National Apology to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, acknowledging Australia’s wrongdoing which resulted in Stolen Generations.

National Apology Day has since been commemorated annually on this day and encourages remembrance of, and apology to, Stolen Generations and those whose lives have been blighted by past government policies of forced child removal and assimilation.

As a Catholic College in the Edmund Rice Tradition we recognise the Touchstone of Inclusive Community. As a St Laurence’s College community, we strive to continue the progress and empowerment of First Nations Australians by taking steps towards reconciliation and by being inclusive in all our actions by acknowledging days such as this.

Academic Assembly and Academic Afternoon Tea

Congratulations to all students who were awarded an Academic Excellence award at our assembly on Wednesday. We welcomed over 65 2022 graduates who achieved an ATAR of 90 or above. It was also great to see so many parents and families at the Academic Afternoon Tea to help celebrate their son’s success.

I also thank all staff involved for making the day a success. I would particularly like to mention the great work of Ms Samantha Harris, Mr Will Pike, Mr Ross Capern, Dr Anthony Young, Ms Zofia Kentrotis, Ms Katie Jordan, Mr Andrew Newcombe, Mr Neill Smith, our Maintenance Staff and IT/AV Team. I also thank teachers for ensuring that our classrooms continue to be an environment of welcome, clarity (of learning), and challenge, which has transferred into excellent academic results.

Lauries Learning Hub – Regular Teaching and Learning Articles

As part of my priority to make teaching and learning more visible across the College community, I have asked Heads of Faculty to develop a regular newsletter article called ‘Lauries Learning Hub’. The main purpose is to showcase the excellent Teaching and Learning that occurs within faculties and classrooms; and is aligned to my vision/mission to uplift learning and make excellent classroom practice more visible. 

Our first article is written by our Head of English – Dr Chris Boerdam. An outstanding educational leader, Chris is an extremely dedicated and passionate senior English teacher who is energised by student creativity – particularly through Socratic Circles. We are extremely lucky to be blessed with an exceptional educational leader such as Chris. His article can be found below in a subsequent section of the newsletter.

Professional Learning Teams – Teaching Sprint Spotlight

A focus on High Impact Teaching Strategies

Teachers at Lauries participate in Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) as part of our meeting cycle. Our focus this year is High Impact Teaching Strategies that can be implemented in classroom practice. Mr Zak McNuff and Mr John Swanston (both Technologies Teachers) have chosen metacognitive strategies for their Term 1 Teaching Sprint cycle.

During Zak and John’s discussion in the first PLT meeting, they agreed that their Year 7 students were asking the same questions regarding their practical work and kept having difficulty with similar concepts.

Consequently, Zak and John collaborated about how it would be useful if we could teach the students to be able to effectively evaluate their own work and be able to reflect and redirect themselves to be more successful in the outcomes of their projects. Thus, teaching the boys agency, along with strategies on how to critically evaluate their own knowledge and skills.

They developed a poster showing a set of three specific ‘Thinking Questions’. The purpose of this is to re-direct students anytime they get stuck on a concept or skill. They can then ask themselves these questions and redirect their own thinking. Having it visible in the classroom can ensure students remember to ask themselves the ‘three thinking questions’ before coming to the teacher.

I congratulate John and Zak for their work and their commitment to continually reflecting on and improving their teaching practice.

Writing at the Sentence level

When I started as an English teacher, I assumed that learning to write was something that happened by a type of textual osmosis: you read a lot, and then you produce texts that sound like what you read. I was also frustrated by students who clearly understood a concept or a text we were covering in class, but then complained that they didn’t know how to write about it. I would say to them: “Just write what you know. Write what you just said to me.” If struggling students followed my advice, the text they produced was often confused and awkward. I had no idea how to help them improve.

That was many years ago. I have since learnt that writing and speaking are very different skills. Comprehending and speaking language are natural skills that all socialised human beings develop. Reading and writing have to be explicitly taught as the part of the brain that we use when we write is not the same part of the brain that we use when we speak. Also, written language is fundamentally different from spoken language. Spoken language tends to be verb-dense, and to be made up of lots of short sentences. Written language is noun-dense, and so communicates information in a more succinct and efficient manner. Of course, speaking, reading, and writing are all related, and a student cannot write at a more sophisticated level than the texts that they read, but it is not the case that a student who can verbally explain a concept can write about it.

How does this affect how we teach writing? Once you realise that we cannot expect writing to come naturally, we can treat writing as a skill like any other. We can then teach writing the same way we would teach any skill: by modelling it for students and by engaging them in practising the components of this skill again and again. In the case of writing, this involves teachers explicitly teaching students sentence structures, modelling using these structures to create sentences, and providing students with a lot of practice in writing sentences.

This is why in the English department at St Laurence’s College, we teach English at the sentence level – not just the word level or the whole-text level. We teach students the basic components of a sentence, and then how to add adjectives, phrases, or subordinate clauses to these sentences to make them complex. To give you an example of how this works, I want to share what Mrs Lightbody taught her Year 9 English students in one of her lessons that I visited this week. She started the class by reviewing a sentence structure that they had learnt the last lesson. This was starting a sentence with an opener in the form of a phrase which starts with a past-participle (we call them ‘ed’-start sentences to make things simple for the students). She then showed the students an intriguing image of a man thawing out a woolly mammoth frozen in ice with a cordless hairdryer. The students enjoyed speculating how this situation in the image had come about, and whether the woolly mammoth was still alive.

Mrs Lightbody then modelled for students a possible ‘ed-start’ sentence about the woolly mammoth. She explained the sentence structure, showing students where the opener was, how she used a comma to separate the opener from the subject of the sentence, and how she checked her sentence was grammatical by identifying the subject and the tensed verb. Students then had the opportunity to write their own ‘ed’-start sentence in response to the image. The students enjoyed the challenge of constructing their own complex sentences, and many pushed themselves to make their sentences as interesting as possible by using creative vocabulary choices. Here are some examples of sentences that they wrote:

• Armed with nothing but his trusty blow-dryer, Steve began freeing the ancient beast from its icy prison.
• Fascinated by the behemoth encased in the thick ice, the explorer starts to melt the glacier.
• Amazed by his discovery, he melts the ice to uncover ancient history, which was the worst thing he could do.

These responses from the students show how powerful teaching at the sentence level can be. All of these students have written a well-structured and perfectly punctuated sentence that opens with a phrase. By teaching students explicit sentence structures, we are providing them with a basic toolbox of options that they can draw on when they write their own work. In the process, we demystify writing for the students – showing them that anyone can write sentences that sound like they are written by a pro.

Another Senior English teacher at our school, Mr Anspach, collects his best student sentences and publishes them on a board at the back of the room called a ‘Bravo Board’. Here is one example of a sentence written by a Year 10 student:

Undoubtedly, Australia’s most important value would have to be meat pies and sausage rolls. A crispy pastry bordering juicy steak and beef, coupled with cold, fresh tomato sauce, creates an iconic snack for a tradie after a long, hard day. 

Although the vocabulary is not perfect, this short sample demonstrates an impressive control over sentence structure. The student has used an adverb as an opener in the first sentence: ‘Undoubtedly’. His second sentence shows excellent control over an expanded noun group which includes a post-modifying phrase followed by an interrupter. Impressively, the tense of his verb matches the main noun of this extended noun-group, which is ‘pastry’, showing that the student has a clear grasp of the main clause of the sentence. These sentences show that this student is employing strategies to improve the precision and fluency of his writing. He has clearly benefited from the modelling and practice of writing at the sentence level.

The best part about teaching at the sentence level is that every student can experience success that comes from overcoming challenge. By giving the students the tools to write complex and sophisticated sentences, we are giving them the confidence to be excellent writers. Learning to be a proficient writer is challenging, but it is a challenge that we can help students meet and overcome - one sentence at a time.

Senior External Examinations

Any students in Year 12 who are proficient in a language other than English may have the opportunity to complete the subject as a Senior External Examination. Successfully completing one of these subjects means that it can contribute to a student’s ATAR, will gain them 4 QCE credits and may also provide adjustment factors for university entry. The language subjects offered are:

• Latin
• Modern Greek
• Polish
• Punjabi
• Russian
• Tamil
• Vietnamese

Applications for this are open until 30 April 2023 – you must register through the school. The cost to enrol for a Senior External Examination is $71.03, which is paid to the school. Interested students are asked to email careers@slc.qld.edu.au as soon as possible, or come into the Careers Office.

Grandshake Virtual Work Experience

Grandshake is a company that offers Virtual work experience opportunities for students in Years 10 – 12, partnering with companies such as Inland Rail, Cardno, AI Group, Consult Australia and ARTC to offer experiences such as:

Grandshake has partnered with industry to design real-world projects that students can work on virtually, connect with industry partners and earn micro-credentials (in the form of digital badges, which can be added to LinkedIn Profiles). The programs require approximately ten hours of commitment and are free for students to enrol in. Tuckwell Scholarship

The Australian National University’s Tuckwell Scholarship applications open 1 March. This scholarship is offered to 25 students around the country and is worth $24,700 per annum to successful applicants.

Academically high-achieving students who are open to the idea of studying interstate next year are encouraged to read through the terms of the scholarship and consider applying – NOTE: if a student applies and is successful, but changes their mind later, they are not obliged to go, so students who are unsure can still apply and consider their final decision around where they will study throughout the year.

Our VET staff and students have been busy to start 2023!

During the Christmas Holidays, current Year 12  student Kevin Reid was selected from hundreds of applications to be part of the Oresome Minds Camp in Newcastle NSW from 5 – 9 December 2022. This is a fully funded camp offered by ARISE and BHP to engage students in the mining industry. Kevin was fortunate enough to visit multiple sites including a mine tour of Mt Arthur Opencut Coal mine in the Hunter Region. He also took part in multiple workshops and tours of Newcastle Port during the week. Well done Kevin!

2023 sees the introduction of the Diploma of Business for the first time at St Laurence’s College. In partnership with Barrington College we have 29 Year 11 students undertaking this Diploma every Tuesday morning 7.30 -9.00am on site at the College. This is such a wonderful opportunity for those students who took the option to study the Diploma.

2023 also sees the Certificate II in Active Volunteering being offered for the second year to all Year 10 students. This certificate is undertaken through Year 10 Student Development and gains each student 4 QCE points whilst learning the valuable gift of volunteering and helping those less fortunate.

Our Certificate I Construction and Certificate II Electrotechnology Year 11 and 12 students completed their White Card Course last Friday 3 February with EDB Training. This core unit is a compulsory unit for all of these students so they can gain access to construction work sites.  

Structured Work Placement applications have been sent to all students in Year 11 and 12 who are studying a VET subject for work experience in the Easter Holidays. Please complete this form by Friday 17 February.

As the school year develops, students should now have an idea of how their study, work, co-curricular and extra-curricular commitments balance during a usual week. The Pastoral Team have a plethora of resources on time management, study plans and goal setting which students can utilise to fulfil their potential, most of which have been provided to students and available through their House Mentor.

Academic Award Celebration

On Wednesday this week we congratulated the academic success of our 2022 students. The joint College Duces were also presented during this wonderful celebration of success at the College, it was wonderful to speak with our 2022 Seniors about their time at the College. In particular however, I would like to congratulate the students from Years 6 - 11 who received awards for academic growth, these students may not have received a Gold or Black award for overall achievement but managed to achieve their personal best and improve their GPA significantly from Semester 1 – an outstanding achievement. 

Year 7 Camp

Connection, fellowship, challenge and resilience are key aspects of our Lauries Journey and this was enacted in reality for our Year 7’s at camp last week. Many thanks must go to Mr David Sheehan (Head of Callan House) and Ms Vanessa Bell (Dean of Middle School) for organising the camp and enabling our students to embrace the College’s theme of Heart of Gold.

Mentoring and Goal Setting

This week and next, most students in the College will have an opportunity to meet with their Mentors – a staff member that will assist with setting goals and focusing on positive educational practices.

Here is an article from Luke McKenna who oversees a pastoral program called Unleashing Personal Potential. The article outlines a simple strategy for setting goals through passwords on electronic devices. Luke writes:

Rationale

Research in the fields of neuroscience and psychology state that goal setting actually works. The most successful people in the world set goals. A useful way to fast-track our goals is to create a goal-orientated password to unlock our devices. We unlock our devices several times each day. Setting a password goal frequently reminds us of what we are striving for, bringing our top priority goal into focus, every time we unlock our device. This works because of our RAS (Reticular Activating System), in our brains. Our RAS acts as a filter for our brain - it blocks out most of the data that our brain receives every second. This allows us to hone in on the things that are most important to us. By changing all of our passwords to reinforce a goal we are trying to accomplish, we will put it top of mind, and unconsciously focus in on ways to make those things happen (Adams-Miller 2014).

Description of Positive Education Practice:

1. Decide what your top priority goal is (it could be to do with school work; relationships, extracurricular, etc.).
2. Next, make your goal password-ready. Be creative. Use shorthand, abbreviations, numbers. For example, if you want to achieve certain grades (3A’s and 2B’s in Semester 1), it could be 3A2Bsem1; or if you want to run 4km in 19 minutes (at the cross country carnival this year), the password goal could be 4k19mins. Other examples are: try1newthing2day, Read20mins, 20pushups, 1actofkindness.
3. If you have access to a device take the time now to change your password.

Main message:

Fast track your goal by bringing it to top of mind with a password goal.

The chance to learn more and tour the College is not over by any means with an in-person or traditional Open Day taking place later in the year on Thursday 27 July at 4pm. Further correspondence will be made available closer to the event.

Our Lady’s College is pleased to be welcoming one of Australia’s most accomplished parenting authors Madonna King to our campus on 21 February, and I would like to extend a personal invitation to any staff or parents in your school community who would be interested in hearing from Madonna on the topical and important areas of teen girls and the crucial support they are seeking.

This event is offered at no cost, but I do ask that interested attendees register via email sannerley@bne.catholic.edu.au  “Yes, ,<insert name/s> will be attending the Madonna King event.”
