Please see webpage for further information. Students interested in applying are asked to come to the Careers Office or see Ms Lightbody (Diverse Learners – High Potential Learners) prior to submitting an application.
Scholarships
Students looking to pursue university studies next year can explore a range of scholarship options outside of those offered by the universities themselves. The University of Southern Queensland has compiled a list of external scholarships available to prospective university students.
Police Work Experience
This week I was lucky enough to be taken on an abbreviated version of what students get to see when undertaking the Police Work Experience program. Careers staff from various schools were taken to and given presentations by the Dog Squad, the Public Safety Response Team, the Communications Team and the Water Police. These were just a handful of the experiences that students got to participate in during the three-day placement. The program is offered to Year 11 and 12 students only (with preference given to Year 12 students), with limited numbers available. The dates for 2024 will be advertised in the new year via email to Year 11 & 12 students and parents. All applications will be submitted in order of response, so please be sure to check your emails if interested.
University Applications
Year 12 students who intend to apply for university for 2024 (or apply and defer for a 2025 commencement) are encouraged to do so by the end of September. The dates for on-time applications for the various Tertiary Admissions Centres around the country are:
Please note – students may be able to put in applications after these dates, however, some courses will be closed. In addition, the cost of applications does increase for some of the Tertiary Admissions Centres.
Early Offer Schemes
The following universities have advertised their schemes for 2024 entry:
Further details, such as how to apply, key dates and included courses can be found on the USQ website.

Interested students need to apply for the next work experience block by close of business on Monday 9 October 2023.
Medicine & Dentistry Information Session
Year 10 and 11 students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or dentistry will be invited to attend our Medicine and Dentistry information Session at 3.15pm on Wednesday 25 October. Currently, we have representatives from UQ, Griffith University, UniSQ, JCU, UTAS and Bond University scheduled to present about their programs. Australian Geomechanics Society Information Evening
Australian Geomechanics Society, Queensland invites interested students and parents to their inaugural school event, aimed at providing high school students (Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11) with an insight into the daily life of a Geotechnical Engineers (Soil Engineers) on Monday 9 October 2023 from 3.30 - 5.00pm at the Brisbane Girls Grammar School (Louise McDonald Room).
The afternoon will include a couple of short presentations by Engineering professionals sharing information about their day-to-day professional lives. The society has acknowledged the need to collaborate with local schools and teachers to educate students about engineering. It is crucial to initiate these interactions with schools as early as possible since students require exposure to industry and career information when they are making important decisions.
If you are a student studying in Years 7 - 11 or parent of a student in Years 7 - 11, you are encouraged to attend this event and learn more about Engineering industry. They are happy to answer any questions you have.
Free catering will be provided to all the attendees.
This is a free event, but it is asked that students and parents register, to assist with catering and planning.

Sports Wrap Up - Recap of Sporting Events
In the last week, St Laurence’s College competed against Padua in the final round of Term 3 AIC Fixtures. In the game of Rugby League, we had a mix of wins and losses, but one standout moment was when our Year 7 team, after several close matches, achieved their first victory of the season. Our First XIII team played a tough game against the eventual AIC Premiers Padua, narrowly losing but finishing the season in a highly respectable third place.
A huge congratulations to our Year 6 team from the Primary School, who not only won the prestigious SEQ Primary Schools Cup but also secured the AIC Premiership. This is a remarkable accomplishment, and we commend all the staff and students involved.
The College had a successful day in Tennis, winning the majority of games. The First IV team finished the season strongly with a good win, placing them in a commendable second position overall in the competition.
In Basketball, the College achieved fantastic results in the younger age groups, winning the majority of games. As a result, Lauries were able to secure the premierships in 10A, 10B, 9A, 8A, and 8B.
Reminder - Track and Field Holiday Training
During the holidays, our AIC Track and Field students will continue to train and participate in warm-up meets to prepare for the AIC Championships on October 5 and 6.
We encourage all students who wish to be selected for the AIC team or students who want to improve their general fitness and speed for their specific team sports to read the holiday training information available on the College App.
Thank you!
We extend our gratitude to everyone who participated in sports throughout Term 3. It was a busy term, and we sincerely appreciate the efforts of everyone involved. Without the dedication of staff, students and parents, sports would not be possible. So, once again, a massive thank you to all of you.
We hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday so that the boys can start Term 4 sports with renewed energy!
