Welcome Back to Term 2
A very warm and heartfelt welcome back to all families. We hope that Term 2 is less disruptive and can continue to provide an excellent environment where our boys can continue to grow and strive for their personal sense of excellence.
Acting Roles
I have the privilege to be serving as the Deputy Principal for the next six weeks when Mr Leadbetter is on leave. Mr Andrew Newcombe will be acting in my role, and Mr Danny O’Sullivan will be acting in the role of Head of Teaching and Learning Senior School. I know they will both do a stellar job, and I congratulate them on their appointment.
ChatGPT and Turn It In
Recently, our plagiarism-checking software ‘Turn It In’ has released an update that can detect the use of AI-generated text. While this is not full proof, our message to students has been that ‘while the College has made the decision to allow the use of ChatGPT, it is still academic misconduct if the text is generated directly from AI tools such as ChatGPT, and submitted as student work’.
It would be appreciated if you could help us to deliver this message to your son.
Year 12 Provisional Results – 1st Internal Assessment
Provisional results for the first Internal Assessment (IA) for all General Year 12 subjects were submitted to the QCAA last Term. Heads of Faculty are currently uploading student evidence, ready for review. I stress that these results are provisional and will not be confirmed and are not available until after Monday 15 May. At this stage, I am very happy with the level of provisional results, and I congratulate Year 12 students on their work thus far. It is very important that we continue this strong academic culture throughout the remainder of the year.
Interim Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews (PTIs)
Internal Reports have been available in Parent Lounge. I congratulate our students for their excellent results, and I am looking forward to welcoming parents via Microsoft Teams for the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews. Laurie’s Learning Hub: Student-led Moot
Student-led learning (or peer-assisted learning) is when students facilitate their own learning by guiding other students in (mostly) group activities to discuss materials and solve problems (University of Melbourne, 2022). Before commencing their final assessment task in Unit 1 Legal Studies, Year 11 students displayed student-led learning at its best through the preparation and presentation of a class Moot. Mooting is a simulated court proceeding where student teams argue a legal problem before a ‘judge’ (Bond University, n.d). Students worked collaboratively via Teams to create the case of a drive-by shooting that resulted in murder. They then assigned roles, researched and devised legal arguments and prepared witness statements for the trial, showing a connection with each other in the learning space. On the day of the Moot, students set up the classroom in the correct court layout and presented their arguments before their teacher (the Judge) with the formality and language expected of the courtroom. It was a brilliant display of enthusiastic student-led learning from our senior students.

Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) Education Award
The Australian Defence Force Academy Education Award is presented annually to Year 12 students in recognition of leadership potential and academic and sporting achievements during Year 11. The award comprises of a laptop computer and certificate for you, along with a plaque of recognition for your school. It is presented to you on behalf of the Navy, Army or Air Force if you’re one of the 120 most suitable applicants who have applied for entry to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).
To be eligible to apply for the award, you must:
If you are successful, you will only receive the award if you are enrolled in Year 12 at the time of the award presentation and you meet the age requirements for ADFA entry. For further information and to apply, visit the ADFA website or contact your local recruitment office on 13 19 01.

UQ Medicine Information Events
The University of Queensland will be holding a UQ Medicine Information Evening for students and parents interested in learning more about pathways into their medical program. UCAT
Students looking to gain entry into provisional medical courses or dentistry courses may wish to sit the UCAT. The UCAT is a requirement for entry into a large number of these courses throughout Australia and some in New Zealand – click here for a list of courses at various universities that require the UCAT to be completed to be eligible. Applications to sit the UCAT opened on 1 March and remain open until Wednesday 17 May, with testing held between 3 July and 12 August. Home Class and Year 12 Photos
This Thursday and Friday will involve photos for all students at the College. The full schedule can be found HERE. A reminder that students must be neatly dressed with correct hair and appropriate grooming (further information on College expectations for uniform and hair can be found in the recent letter for all parents and caregivers at the end of Term 1 or in the College student diary). Students who do not meet College standards may miss out on this opportunity.
Student Surveys
This Thursday (8.30-9am), all students at the College will complete an online survey. Year 5 and 7 students will complete a transition survey – how well have they settled into life at St Laurence’s College? Our Year 6, 8-12 students will complete a student satisfaction survey. The results of these surveys can be cross-referenced with other EREA Colleges to determine our strengths and areas for College improvement.
ANZAC Day
This Monday, the College will hold an ANZAC Day service for all students and staff at the College. On Tuesday the College will have a presence at Ekibin Memorial Park (6.30am start) for the ANZAC Day Ceremony where Acting Principal Mr Ben Lowrie and College Captain Mackenzie Douglas will lay a wreath on behalf of the College. All students, staff, parents and caregivers are welcome to attend.
Consent Talk
This Wednesday during their Lauries Journey Lesson, Year 11 and 12 students will hear from lawyer Mr Mark Schofield about the topic of consent. We encourage all parents to talk to their sons before and after this presentation to check-in and clarify their understanding of this important topic.
Term 2 sport – Chess, Football and Rugby
The Pastoral Team would like to wish all participants the very best in the trial round against Marist College Ashgrove tomorrow. Messages to the students this week have been about their presentation before and after games (full College winter uniform if staying to watch other games), winning well and losing graciously.

Welcome to Music in Term 2! In the last week of Term 1, on Thursday 30 March, students from the Little Brotherhood choir performed with six other school male voice choirs in the Pemulwuy National Male Voice Festival prelude concert, organised by the Voices of Birralee and held at Mansfield State High School. It was a wonderful opportunity for our boys and their performance was well-received by the audience.
TERM 2 DATES:
Guitar Orchestra 2 & Concert Band 3 will be combining with students from St Joseph’s Primary School (Kangaroo Point) for music workshops and a concert together @ 5pm for family and friends.
Performing will be Concert Band 3, Big Band 3, String Orchestra 3, Treblehood, Cambiata, Percussion Ensemble 2 & Year 5 Ensembles.
Family and friends are invited to attend. A BBQ and bar will be provided by our Lauries Music Support Group prior to the concert.
Big Band 1 have been invited to perform at the Brisbane Jazz Club Youth Festival along with Talkin’ Jazz, Centenary SHS Stage Band, Wavell High School Big Band and UQ Big Band.
Guitar Orchestra 1 have been invited to perform at the Brisbane Combined Schools Guitar Concert held at St Rita’s College, Clayfield. Riverside Guitar Ensemble (Griffith University) will be special guest performers.
Concert Band 1, Big Band 1, Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra 1, Fellowship of the String, Guitar Orchestra 1, Percussion Ensemble 1, Brotherhood, Big Brotherhood and Little Brotherhood will be performing. Further details will be sent out soon.
This year, St Laurence’s College is hosting the state Confraternity Rugby League Competition. This event will be opened with a Mass in the ERPAC auditorium on Sunday 25 June at 6pm. Mr Leadbetter has asked that the Music Department create a “Lauries-style Mass” with our Worship Band and all available singers.
It should be a wonderful event for the College and we encourage students to take part. If you are able to participate, either as a singer or musician, please use the link provided below to sign up. You will be required from 4.30pm to 7.30pm and further information will be provided closer to the time.

Brotherhood Choir students were invited to this Festival to experience workshops, performances and rehearsals with renowned conductors and singers, culminating in a performance on the main stage of QPAC.

Our next Lauries Music Support Group Meeting will be held in Term 2 on Tuesday 9 May in room MU1 (Top floor VAPA building). A great way to support your son at Lauries is by joining the parent’s music support group. Meetings are once a month on the second Tuesday of each month (term time).

Welcome back to what is an incredibly busy term for our Lauries Sporting Teams. We know the holidays were a busy time for many, but hope everyone had an opportunity to recharge and be ready for the hectic term ahead.

A huge thank you must go to all of the staff involved over the break for putting on a large number of sporting opportunities for the boys. Thank you to all of the parents who supported at the various carnivals and sessions over the break. I have listed below the large number of activities that occurred.
Cross Country- Holiday Training including Woody Cup Old Boys Event (Coincidently the College won the event!)
Rugby- Holiday Training clinic, Trial Games v SPC, First XV Gold Coast Camp and Ballymore Cup (First XV and Foundation Squad)
Football- EREA Football Tournament and First XI Camp (The Year 7 Black team won their division of the EREA Tournament)
Chess- Holiday Clinic and AIC Invitational Tournament
Term 2 Playing Uniforms
We ask that families please ensure for the commencement of the AIC competition season next weekend that students have the appropriate uniform for the sport they are playing. This includes a shirt/jersey, SLC shorts and the appropriate socks for either rugby or football. The SLC Gold Co-Curricular shirt can be worn for warm-ups but should not be worn during fixtures.
Sports Lunch
A reminder to all families that the inaugural Lauries Sports Lunch will be held on Friday 5 May. Ticket sales will have to strictly close on Monday 24 April. This will be a great day and hopefully will become a permanent fixture on the College calendar.

DO YOU NEED A BLAZER, TIE OR TROUSERS FOR TERMS 2 & 3?
It is compulsory during Terms 2 and 3 that all students wear the College Blazer to and from school each day. The College tie is also to be worn all day.
It is compulsory for Years 10, 11 and 12 to wear Grey trousers during these terms as well. Grey or black socks are to be worn with trousers.

Students are expected to be at school and moving to class by 8.30am. If a student is going to be absent from school (for the whole day or part of the day) parents are asked to notify the College.

To use this option, log into your Parent Lounge and select Attendance from the menu. From here you can select your child and complete the options regarding reason and timing of absence.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,
On Thursday 4 May 2023, the College will be offering Flu vaccinations to all students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Dr Juergen Landmann has generously offered to donate his time for these vaccinations in the hope that families will make a donation to some of our ministries like, our House in Action projects and our food service program at Emmanuel City Mission.
St Laurence’s College has several Faith in Action groups through our Houses that we fundraise for, including Emmanuel City, Edmund Rice Camps and Sony Camp. Donations like this help us continue our work like our breakfast, lunch and dinner programs at Emmanuel City Mission. We are asking parents to donate through Parent Lounge in your nominated amount of $5, $10 or $20. Even if your son is eligible for a vaccination covered by Medicare at your local GP, the vaccine is normally still purchased for $15.
If your son is to receive the flu vaccination, please complete the following:
1. Please log into Parent Lounge and accept the invitation to give permission for him to have the vaccination
2. Complete the attached Flu Quadri Vaccine Consent and Medicare form
3. On the day, your son must bring the signed Flu Quadri Vaccine Consent and Medicare form; without this form, he will not be able to be administered the Flu Vaccine.
On Thursday 4 May 2023, Year 10, 11 and 12 students will be called from class to receive their vaccination and return to class after. As above, the attached Consent Form must be completed and returned with the student on the day of their vaccination.
Could you please respond by Thursday 27 April with permission through the Parent Portal and payment if you wish your son to be vaccinated.

It’s that time of year again folks!
The Mini Vinnies crew in Primary are looking to complete our Annual ILF Book Swap and we need your help. Dust off your shelves and donate any unwanted books you may have that would suit Primary-aged children, particularly 9-12 year olds. We are also very happy to accept any picture books you might have.
These books will then be sold by the Mini Vinnies students in Week 8 of this term for $1.
All money raised will go to the excellent Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The ILF produces books for children in their own Indigenous language; they provide education for remote Indigenous communities around Australia to increase literacy rates and the ILF supports reading by supplying books and other items to the remote corners of our land. It is a brilliant cause and one we have supported for over ten years.
Please donate any books you think would help our cause to the Primary office or 6MR before Week 8.

April extended track closures – Friday 7 until Thursday 27 April
Cross River Rail will be undertaking major track works across the network for 21 days starting Good Friday 7 April. There will be significant changes to transport services during this period, including a series of track closures that will affect all lines, with trains also running to altered timetables. This includes changes on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines for the first two weeks of Term 2.
Please remember if you are planning to travel during this period, plan ahead using Translink’s journey planner to find out your best travel options. Attached is a flyer with further information if required.
