FROM THE PRINCIPAL
On Saturday I returned from six weeks' leave from the College. I wish to acknowledge the excellent leadership of Ben Lowrie who acted as Principal in my absence. I must also affirm Dr Liam Herbert and Mr Andrew Newcome for their leadership in acting roles. At St Laurence’s College, we are blessed to have great leadership amongst our staff. A key part of my leave was the Edmund Rice Beyond Borders Congress (EREBB) held in Dublin. At this Congress staff and Principals journeyed to Dublin from Australia, Ireland, England, Africa, North and South America and Asia.
Over 300 delegates from Edmund Rice Schools and networks met at Dublin City University. This network is indeed unique, yet I left with a sense of gratitude for the St Laurence’s College Community. Our school is unique, life-giving, and mission-focused. It’s good to be back.
On Monday I attended the funeral of Old Boy, Mr Antony Raiteri at St Thomas’ Church Camp Hill. Antony is an Old Boy from the Senior class of 1984 and has had significant involvement in the Old Boys Association and the Foundation in recent years. Our condolences go to Gail, Jonathon, Joseph, Declan, and Molly at this difficult time. All who knew “Rat” have been influenced by his passion and inclusion. May he Rest in Peace.
On Saturday we also hosted a ‘Back to Runcorn’ day for former First XV and First XI players from the Senior Classes of 1963, 1973, 1983 and 1993 from St Laurence’s College and Marist College Ashgrove. It was great to be able to host Mr Michael Newman from Ashgrove and our guests. The Old Boy Football and Touch games were played in great spirit.
Attendance on the day was excellent and I thank Ms Turner, Mr Pike and Mr Wallace for their organisation of the day.
Today we conduct our annual House Choir competition. I thank Mr Knight and the Heads of House for coordinating this. Our movement to a House system six years ago has had a great impact on the growth and well-being of all.
I congratulate Nagle House and the Head of House, Mr Du Plessis for winning the day.
As we move to the final week of term many of our students will have assessment due and exams. It is important that our students have a clear study plan. Time management is not always a strength for all our boys, so planning is essential.
I wish all boys well during the final week of term. I especially wish our Year 9 boys well as they embark on their annual outdoor education experience. I thank Ms Bell and the pastoral staff for co-ordinating this camp.
This weekend marks the final week of Term 2 sport. I thank all Coaches, Managers and Volunteers for their efforts this term. Term 2 is our busiest term with Rugby, Football, Cross Country and Chess. I was delighted to hear that our Cross Country team finished third while I was on leave. Our First IV Chess have already secured the Chess Premiership and the First XI Football have lost only one match and can still share the Premiership if results go our way. This weekend also has two undefeated First XV Rugby teams meet at Padua’s playing field at Banyo to decide the Premiership.
Mr Wallace and his team and all Coaches and Managers have done an extraordinary job this term. I thank them all and I wish all boys well this weekend.
Enjoy the last week of term.
MR BEN LOWRIE
Principal (Acting)
