Dean of Primary - Term 3 Edition #4
Dear Parents & Caregivers,
Life in Primary continues to be very busy. All classes are immersed in current units of work, with assessment very near, or in some cases, already underway. Boys have been given the very simple advice to:
1. Ask for help if needed.
2. Don’t leave assessment tasks until the last minute.
3. Do regular study in small amounts, instead of one large session the night before a test.
Teachers provide lots of scaffolding and resources to support Task Sheets. The boys should feel well prepared and confident to do “their best”.
Walkathon
Last Friday we joined with the rest of the Lauries family to celebrate the Solidarity Mass and Walkathon. The mass was the perfect way to start the major charity fundraiser on the calendar. The theme of the mass is “Walking With” the most vulnerable in society. The physical commitment to walk 15km is a testament to the boy’s effort to support the charities connected to the “Houses” and the wider College community. The fundraising last term provides amazing financial support to fund the great work of help these charities. This year a massive $115,000 was raised, with an extraordinary $46,000 being collected by the Primary boys. Congratulations to all boys on this unbelievable effort. Special mention must go to Lachlan Murphy, James Mifsud, Cian McAllister and Javier Le Mercier who were all in the top five fundraisers. It was a special day, with record attendance and a wonderful spirit.
Lauries boys and families again stepped up when called on. We are very fortunate to belong to such a caring community.
Father’s Day
On Wednesday evening, we celebrated Father’s Day in Primary. The casual sausage sizzle and a movie in ERPAC was a relaxing and enjoyable way to celebrate Father’s Day and show appreciation for all of the fantastic support Dads, and other male role models, provide the boys. It was terrific to have nearly 500 guests (adults and boys) to come and spend time with the boys. We hope you enjoyed the event and hope that Sunday is a great family time.
Orientation Day
Today we welcomed the Year 5 boys (2023) and their families to Lauries for their Orientation Day. The looks of excitement and anticipation on the boys’ faces was great to see. We welcome all the new boys and their families as they commence their Lauries Journey next year and look forward to the contribution they will make to our wonderful community in the Primary School. Our current Year 6 students also participated in the Year 7 Orientation activities today, along with the students who will be new to Lauries in Year 7, 2023. This gave the boys the opportunity to engage with their Heads of House, House Mentors and other key staff who will support them as they transition to Secondary School.
Enrolment Year 5 2024
Enrolment interviews for Year 5, 2024 are now complete. If you know a family interested in joining Lauries in 2024 (Year 5) please check with them to ensure they have submitted their application. If they missed the enrolment period, please ask them to contact Tina McManus by email at TMcManus@slc.qld.edu.au to commence a late application.
Important Notice for 2023
If your son is not returning to St Laurence’s College in 2023, please inform me in writing at cwigan@slc.qld.edu.au by the last day of Term 3 (16 September) at the very latest. There are many families on the waiting list who are enquiring about positions and we would love to offer enrolment opportunities if spots become available.
Year 5 Camp
The Year 5 camp will be in Week 1 next term (October 5-7). Please ensure all of the necessary paperwork and permissions are completed by Friday, 9 September. All Year 5 parents have been emailed documentation for the camp this week. It is absolutely essential that all medical forms and permissions are completed by the due date.
End of Term Raffle
On the last day of Term 3, will be conducting our monster raffle from the hundreds of raffle tickets that have been awarded to the boys this term. If you would like to donate any prizes, please feel free to send them to the Primary Office. Thank you in advance to those families who are able to assist with prize donations (big or small). The boys really appreciate it.
In this edition of the Primary Newsletter, you can also read about Curriculum Updates, Music, Date Claimers, Upcoming Events and Lauries Journey Awards.
Enjoy the weekend and the final two weeks of Term 3. We hope all dads and significant male role models have a fantastic day on Sunday.
Kind Regards
